The Darling Buds are back with a new album in July . Newport’s brightest pop band achieved great notoriety particularly in the late 1980’s but they are enjoying another era of success. Same Sun / Same Sky is the band’s first new full-length album since 1992 and is released by the mighty Cherry Red Records label. They say “12 new tracks packed with melodic guitars, soaring harmonies and the upbeat indie pop sound that made them cult favourites in the first place.”
The current Darling Buds line up consists of original lead singer and creator Andrea Lewis, guitarists Matt Gray and Paul “Chaz” Watkins who joined for 1992’s Erotica, and newer members drummer Erik Stams and bassist Dave Corten.
The Darling Buds became one of the most distinctive indie-pop bands of their era. Formed in Caerleon in 1986, the group combined jangly guitars, infectious melodies and an energetic punk spirit, creating a sound that captured the optimism and colour of the late indie boom. Fronted by the charismatic Andrea Lewis, whose bright vocals became the band’s trademark, the Darling Buds quickly developed a loyal following on the UK independent music circuit.
DJ John Peel passed their contact details on and they were rewarded with a major record label signing “It all happened very quickly” Andrea told the Argus in 2016 “luckily we were all very good mates. I was quite naive – I was only 19”.
The band’s early singles, including “If I Said” and “Shame on You”, earned critical attention through radio play and appearances in the music press. Their debut album, Pop Said… (1988), is widely regarded as a classic of British indie pop, released as part of a deal with Epic (Sony) records. Packed with catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms, the record reflected influences ranging from 1960s guitar pop to post-punk, while maintaining a youthful freshness that appealed to a growing student audience. Songs such as “Burst” and “Hit the Ground” showcased the band’s talent for combining commercial appeal with alternative credibility. The latter reached 27 in the singles chart, some achievement.
By the early 1990s, the Darling Buds had moved towards a heavier, more polished rock sound, particularly on albums such as Crawdaddy and Erotica. Although this stylistic shift divided some fans, it demonstrated the group’s willingness to evolve rather than remain confined to the indie-pop label. Although they toured the United States in support of the album for a year, the members of the Darling Buds grew increasingly frustrated by their lack of commercial success and disbanded.
Andrea, in particular, went on to other things and after acting on several European tours with Elan theatre company she applied to join the Central School of Speech and Drama in 1996 graduating in 1999. She followed this by presenting a BBC Wales arts show and forming a joint venture school of theatre and music for local children with her husband, actor Jamie Jarvis. The academy started at Caerleon Comprehensive in 2004.
In 2010 the band briefly reformed with different backing players to perform as part of a concert in aid of the late John Sicolo of TJs fame.In 2014 a further gig at Borderline, Kentish Town preceded by a performance at Le Pub in Newport was announced as their last stint but due to significant interest the band did two further gigs at the Lexington Club in London. Maintaining the momentum the band continued to play live and released their first new material in 25 years, an EP entitled Evergreen, via a Cardiff label called Oddbox in 2017. This was followed in 2023 by a comprehensive Cherry Red records release of their best material including recordings while they were in Los Angeles in the period they toured the USA.
But despite the belated success and the new album with Cherry Red Records Andrea recently told Outside Left magazine “There’s lots of other distractions now as well. We’ve all got families.” Matt Gray added ‘it’s a pure hobby now.’ Their aspirations are more grounded than before but they are definitely enjoying the Darling Buds’ second life.
