Newport Wasps’ 1969 season was poor finishing 17th out of 19 in a fiercely competitive British League won by the Poole Pirates.
New top man Hungarian Sandor Lévai emerged as the team’s top performer, averaging a strong 8.34. But there was very little effective support. The Wasps did not get close to an away win – their best effort a 42-35 defeat at Cradley. They were solid at home opening with big wins over Newcastle and Oxford but suffered four defeats including a 46-32 loss to Poole.
Levai took a while to settle in his role and even dropped down to reserve at one stage but he recorded some big victories including wins over Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs at Somerton Park.
Norman Strachan and Chris Julian provided able support but the remainder had little impact including the brief appearance of Norwegian Einar Egedius
