Nov 9 – Many households are receiving additional help with their energy bills this winter due to the expanded warm home discount scheme and the revised winter fuel payment provision.
Warm Home Discount payments are being made now to eligible households by energy providers. 6.1 million households on means tested benefits will receive the £150 payment directly into their energy account. We estimate that 12,000 households in Newport will receive a £150 towards their bills. The criteria is here

The scheme has been expanded significantly to remove energy criteria and include more means tested benefits.

In addition, after being tied to Pension Credit in 2024/25 the winter fuel payment scheme has been expanded significantly.  For the 2025-26 winter, all households with someone born before 22 September 1959 will receive a payment, unless they choose to opt out. However, if a pensioner’s taxable income is over £35,000, the payment will be recovered through the tax system. Payments range from £100 to £300. The revised scheme widens entitlement to nine million pensioners with thousands in Newport likely to benefit where just under a fifth of all homes including pensioner households.
