NEWPORT SPEEDWAY IN 1970
Newport Wasps struggled in 1970. Changes in personnel Edward Stangeland, Bengt Brannefors and Bill Andrew strengthened the team but they continued to lack any stars and strong reserves. As a result their season fell away and they finished bottom of the British League by a comfortable margin.
Sandor Levai continued to lead the line but his 8.5 average was some way short of team leaders at the major clubs. The Wasps suffered some humiliating early away losses, but Levai did guide them to a convincing 43-35 at Poole. Unfortunately they lost their home record shortly after this going down 44-34 to a strong Coventry side.
Nigel Boocock carried off the Welsh Open trophy taking advantage of the absence of Barry Briggs. Great Britain beat Sweden at Somerton Park 70-38 in July. Wasps' Bill Andrew won the Southern Riders Championship qualifier with Levai second and Bob Highes in third. Briggs was back at the end of the season to win the Prince of Wales Trophy.
